Accordionist,
pianist and keyboardist, Mario Bruneau expresses himself in a variety of
musical styles and repertoire ranging from jazz to new-age, passing thru
bal musette, chanson française and pop. He began learning the accordion
at 8 years old to carry on his music apprenticeship on the piano at age
14. Since then, music always been his day-to-day companion.
In the early seventies, Mario played on tour and recorded with several
well known Quebecker artists. Among them, Plume Latraverse with whom he
played piano, accordion an Hammond B3 organ on his very first album
titled Triniterre. On Plume Pou Digne his second album
, where he was given the nickname of choir after his
performance in singing six back-ups vocals parts for the song: "Quel
calvaire!", Mario's percussionist talent where also put into
contribution.
Those where the days of the famous cabaret "La Casanous" on
Sherbrooke Street in Montreal. That's where his piano tuner carreer
began. No money to call the tuner and Mario couldn't stand playing an
out-of-shape piano so he decided to do it himself. As the house
pianist, he accompanied number of artists like Raoul Duguay and Steve
"Rocking-Blind Cassonade" Faulkner.
In 1995, we saw him at the Montreal Spectrum playing with
Hélène Cardinal, Renée Claude, Sylvie Tremblay and Geneviève Paris. We
can hear him at the accordion, piano, synthesizers and classical organ
on the CD album "Les Orgues Barbares"
that he produced with Hélène Cardinal. Diane Dufresne hired him
as a programmer and piano specialist on her most recent album. Plume
Latraverse also called him back last year to record some tracks for his
new album "Mixed Grill". Three
cuts from his very first album "Triniterre" recorded in 1970 with
tracks of piano and accordion by Mario are also included in mixed grill.
In 1987, Mario Bruneau discovers the "musette"
repertoire from an audio cassette that Plume brought back from a visit
in Paris. From now on, he decided to adopt this style and to make it
his specialty. Influenced by the "Manouches" (Gipsies) and stemming from
the "Auvergnates" and the Italian communities who came in Paris at the
turn of the 19th and 20th century, the musette represents a world
patrimonies that deserve to be preserved. Just like the tango from
Buenos Aires and the bossa nova from Rio de Janeiro, the musette from
Paris is one of the rare urban folklores to resist time. Molded by the
"bad guys" that frequented the bals musette of the 11th arrondissement
in Paris or else, fed by the torment of the poets and artists who hanged
around the Montmartre's cafés, the musette carries all the range of the
human's emotions. For a nostalgic, joyful or poetic atmosphere, nothing
beats the musette for the variety of moods it is capable.
Big fan of the accordion, Mario Bruneau participate at its broadening
thanks to his historical and technical knowledge which he share in the
accordion world. Being a professional piano tuner for almost 30 years
now, he puts this knowledge into contribution to develop new fabrication
an tuning techniques. His multimedia presentation is always a big
success everywhere it is presented.
Mario Bruneau owns and runs a recording studio with which he compose and
produce original tracks for TV5 (the biggest French-speaking
television network in the world) as well as for theater, publicity and
radio like CKMF Montreal. His studio is equipped with the most
recent Hi-Tech equipments available today. Multi talented, Mario takes
care of all the different aspect of a project, from the concept right
thru the "ready for marketing" state.
Several CDs are available from him. "cité lumière" is the music him
and Hélène Cardinal plays at le BATEAU-MOUCHE in Montréal. Songs from
Edith Piaf and musette accordion is on the program. "Je Thème" is an
album of solo piano recorded on his vintage Blüthner 7' grand piano
(1893) consisting of some of his compositions. You can also get Hélène
Cardinal's first CD entitled "Les Orgues Barbares" by e-mail. An accordion CD of
his compositions "Un Soufflet Au Coeur"
will soon be available.
